About me
Alexandros-Apostolos A. Boulogeorgos
I was born in Trikala, Greece, in 1988. I received the Diploma degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Ph.D. degree in wireless communications from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in 2012 and 2016, respectively. My PhD thesis title is "Interference mitigation techniques in modern wireless communication systems". From 2022, I serve as an Assistant Professor in Wireless Telecommunications at the Department Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of the University of Western Macedonia, Greece, where I lead the SIRIUS group. From 2017 to 2022, I worked as a Senior Researcher at the Department of Digital Systems, University of Piraeus, where I conducted research in the area of wireless communications with emphasis to high-frequency wireless systems. From October 2012 to September 2016, I was a Teaching Assistant with the Department of ECE, AUTh, and from February 2017 to September 2022, I served as an Adjunct Professor with the Department of ECE, University of Western Macedonia, and as an Visiting Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics, University of Thessaly as well as at the Department of Computer Science and Communications, University of Thessaly.
I have worked in several research projects that have been funded by the European Commission or from national resources. Indicative examples are the FP7 SOLDER project, the THALES MIMOSA, THALES SOCONET, H2020 enCOMPASS, H2020 TERRANOVA, IRIDA, H2020-5GPPP ARIADNE, HE TALON, SNS-JU NANCY, and H.F.R.I. MINOAS. My work in the aforementioned projects spanned from research assistant to project coordinator. However, my technical contribution was in the broad area of wireless communications, i.e., wireless network/system architecture design, channel/system/network modeling, baseband signal processing, performance assessment and optimization, technology gaps identification, requirement analysis, etc. I have (co-)authored more than 160 technical papers, which were published in scientific journals, presented at prestigious international conferences, becomes parts of scientific books as chapters, or technical reports. Furthermore, Two (one national and one European) patents have been granted to me, while I have recently filled other four (4) patents. My current research interests span the area of wireless communications and networks with emphasis in high frequency communications, intelligent communication systems, ultra-dense wireless networks, integrated communications and sensing, optical wireless communications, and signal processing and communications for biomedical applications. Together with my team, we try to make scientific breakthroughs and as a second step create an interface between our fundamental research and applied innovation.
I was awarded the Distinction Scholarship Award from the Research Committee of AUTh in 2014, and was recognized as an Exemplary Reviewer for IEEE COMMUNICATION LETTERS in 2016 (top 3% of reviewers). Moreover, I was named a Top Peer Reviewer (top 1% of reviewers) in Cross-Field and Computer Science in the Global Peer Review Awards 2019, which was presented by the Web of Science and Publons. Finally, in 2021, I received the best oral presentation award in the International Conference on Modern Circuits and Systems Technologies (MOCAST) 2021. I have been involved as a member of organizational and technical program committees in several IEEE and non-IEEE conferences and served as a reviewer in various IEEE journals and conferences. I am an IEEE Senior Member and a Member of the Technical Chamber of Greece. I currently serve as an Editor for IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS and IEEE COMMUNICATIONS LETTERS, an Associate Editor for the Frontier in Communications and Networks, and for the MDPI~Telecom. Finally, I have participated as a guest editor in the organization of a number of special issues in IEEE and non-IEEE journals.
Our group
SIRIUS research group
SIRIUS stands for "Wireless communication and advanced signal processing: A deep tech group for research and innovation". Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. Its name is derived from the Greek word Σείριος (Latin script: Seirios), meaning lit. 'glowing' or 'scorching'. The group was established in 2023 and consists of universities professors, postdocs, PhD candidates, and Master students.
